How to mark someone as deceased on a genogram
In a genogram a death is shown by an X through the person’s symbol. In Genogram Creator you set this with the status pill at the top of the person’s details panel, then add the date and cause of death under Vitals & Dates.
Works the same on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Step by step
- 1
Select the person
Open your genogram and tap the person (click on Mac). Their details panel opens: on the right on iPad and Mac, sliding up from the bottom on iPhone.
- 2
Change the status to Deceased
Tap the status pill under the person’s name (it says Alive) and choose Deceased. An X is drawn through their symbol.
- 3
Open Vitals & Dates
Tap Vitals & Dates (calendar icon). The Birth block holds the birth date, age and birthplace. Once the person is deceased, a Death block appears below it.

- 4
Add the death details
Fill in the date of death (month and day are optional), Death Place, Cause of Death, and, if you don’t know the exact dates, Age at Death. Burial Date and Burial Place are there too.
- 5
Show the cause of death on the chart
The age shows as “d. 2019 (age 74)”. To also write the cause under the name, tap Text Labels (the tag icon) in the toolbar and turn on Death.

Tips
Only know an age?
Type an age instead of a year in the box next to the status pill: one to three digits is read as an age and the birth year is worked out for you, four digits as a birth year.
Pregnancy and pregnancy loss
The same status pill has Pregnancy (a triangle), Miscarriage (a small filled dot), Stillbirth (a small symbol with an X) and Abortion (a small X), following standard (McGoldrick-style) genogram notation.
