How to show gender identity and sexual orientation on a genogram
Each person’s symbol follows their gender. Genogram Creator includes the standard square and circle plus symbols for trans, nonbinary, intersex and unknown gender, and records sexual orientation and pronouns in Identity & Names.
Works the same on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Step by step
- 1
Select the person
Open your genogram and tap the person (click on Mac). Their details panel opens: on the right on iPad and Mac, sliding up from the bottom on iPhone.
- 2
Change the gender
Tap the colored symbol at the top-left of the details panel and choose a gender, or open Identity & Names and use the Gender menu. Options are Male, Female, Trans Male, Trans Female, Nonbinary, Intersex, Unknown, Other and Pet.

- 3
Add orientation and pronouns
In Identity & Names, choose an Orientation (Heterosexual, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Asexual, Pansexual, Queer or Unknown) and type Pronouns. To mark orientation on the chart, tap Text Labels (the tag icon) and turn on Sexual Orientation.
- 4
Record other names
Maiden name, nickname, title, suffix and an alternative name are kept in the same section. The name shown on the chart is the one at the top of the panel; tap it to edit.
Tips
What the symbols look like
Trans Male is a circle inside a square and Trans Female a square inside a circle. Nonbinary is a rounded square, Unknown a diamond, and Intersex a circle with a vertical line.
