How to add medical conditions to a genogram
Medical history goes in the Medical section of each person’s details panel. Each condition has its own color, and the person’s symbol is shaded using the common McGoldrick-style convention: physical or mental illness in the left half, alcohol or drug use in the bottom half.
Works the same on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Step by step
- 1
Select the person
Open your genogram and tap the person (click on Mac). Their details panel opens: on the right on iPad and Mac, sliding up from the bottom on iPhone.
- 2
Open the Medical section
Tap Medical (the red clipboard icon). On iPhone, tap the Medical chip at the top of the panel.
- 3
Tap each condition that applies
Choose from 22 conditions, including Heart, Cancer, Diabetes, Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar, PTSD, ADHD, Alcohol and Substance. The symbol shades in that condition’s color. Tap a condition again to remove it.

- 4
Set the status and add a note
Each condition you pick appears under Active Conditions with a text field and three pills: Active (solid fill), Recovery (outline only) and Suspected (stripes). Type a short note, such as “Type 2 diabetes, newly diagnosed”. That note is what is written under the person’s name.
- 5
Add anything not on the list
Under Other Conditions, tap + to add a condition by name. Pick its color, and mark it as an illness or a substance so it shades the correct half.
- 6
Make sure the Medical view is on
Shading, notes and the Medical part of the legend show only while the Medical view is on (it is on by default). To hide medical information, for example before sharing with a family, tap Views (the layers button in the toolbar on iPad and Mac, or the More tools menu (…) on iPhone) and turn off Medical.

Tips
Half (McGoldrick-style) or Quadrant shading
The Shading buttons at the top of the section switch the whole genogram between McGoldrick-style halves and Quadrants, where up to four conditions fill the corners and five or more become pie slices.
