How to show marriage, divorce and separation on a genogram
Partnerships are the horizontal lines between two people. Every partnership starts as a marriage line, and you can change it to any of 18 relationship types by tapping the line.
Works the same on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Step by step
- 1
Add a partner
Select a person. Six round buttons appear around them; tap the pink heart (Add Partner). A partner is added beside them, joined by a marriage line. To connect two people who are already on the chart, drag from the blue link (Draw Connection) onto the other person.
- 2
Tap the line between them
The relationship panel opens. At the top you can switch the line between Partner, Parent-Child and Pet.
- 3
Pick the relationship type
Commitment Level: Dating, Cohabitation, Engagement, Marriage, Life Partner or Unknown. Dissolution: Physical Separation, Legal Separation, Divorce, Remarriage, Annulment or Widowed. Circumstances: Affair, Affair (Separated), Affair (Divorced), Affair (Married), One Night Stand or Rape. The line redraws in the matching notation, for example two slashes for a divorce.
- 4
Add the marriage date and a note
Tap Add marriage date to record when they married. Use the Label / Note field for anything else, for example “div. 2015”.

Tips
Several partners
Add Partner again for a second marriage. Children added with Add Child are linked to every partner of that person, so check the parent lines afterwards.
